At the park behind Sheng-Siong, song bird hobbyists gather with their birds in cages. These cages are hung on trees and specially made tall poles at the open area, to get birds to sing. Owners raise their bird cages high up on poles, the idea being that birds will feel at home at those heights and will begin to sing. Song birds are extremely popular, with zebra dove being the most common and sought after, i was told. They even have monthly competitions at the Kebun Baru bird club in Ang-mo-kio to decide the best singer. One of the owners talked about how someone once bought a special bird for three thousand dollars! For these passionate birders, weekend mornings are also a time to meet up with fellow birders, chat and have a relaxed time listening to their birds.
