Irulars derive their name from the root word "Irul" which means darkness, a name that possibly referenced their dark skin during colonial times. True to the tribe's name, the Irula hamlet Serukkanur is shrouded in darkness. There has been no electricity in the village. People have been struggling and demanding for a connection for nearly 8 years. After sunset, the hamlet plunges in darkness, except for a couple of houses that have managed to draw power illegally from the lines that pass close to their homes.
