Kanniamma, one of the important members of the Irula community is is believed to be possessed by the Goddess Mariamma. The Irulas slaughter a goat and a hen in honour of the Goddess to mark the beginning of the festival which continues till later in the night. Usually one of the key members of the community carries a tray of cooked rice mixed with goat blood, around the village. Since the village is far from the temple, Kanniamma and her assistant go around the temple throwing the contents of the plate along the way, in a ritual purification ceremony. Their mouths are also smeared with the mixture. Kanniamma seems distraught, blank, tired and sometimes angry. She seems to oscillate between different emotional states.
