Dance of the Fire Dragon { 34 images } Created 14 Mar 2019

The Fire Dragon Dance is a unique religious event held in Singapore. The event is organized by the Sar Kong Mun San Fook Tuck Chee temple, which is likely the only Cantonese temple in Singapore with a history dating back to the late 1800s. It was built to cater to the needs of the Cantonese migrant 'coolies'. The event is held once every 3 years to celebrate the birth of the Earth deity. The fire dragon, made of straw and adorned with hundreds of joss sticks, emerges from the temple to be carried around the locality by tens of volunteers. This dance is preceded by rituals, beating of drums and with the 5 possessed Gods leading the way in front of the dragon. I have tried to present the images in the order in which the event happened. I also intend to visit the temple museum to explore its history and get a better understanding.
